Ok yes i agree that people should use good grammar, not grammer, bit of a hypocrite arent you?

I fail to see what you are getting at though, i dont think the general standard of grammar is low on this forum and who really cares that people dont use words like prevalence. I mean come on ,who do you think you are? Not all people have a huge vocabulary, are good readers or spellers. Some people, me, arent A* english people. There is no need to come out with pervasiveness or others or to insult people who are less learned. You were asking for a flame.

The "Got Grammer?" bit was a joke. I agree with you that the general standard of English on this board is pretty high. Who do I think I am? I'm not jumping down anyone's throat everytime they fail to capitalize i or separate a sentence with a period. If you read some of the posts from the link in point 7, you'll understand what I mean. In terms of vocabulary, I think mine is pretty limited. And, yes, I explicitly asked for flames as well as thoughts.

I contemplated the fact that the got grammer could have been a joke but i thought no, he wouldnt because its just not funny. I even knew youd come back with the ' yes i explicitly asked for flames' because you would think that was a witty comeback, we both knew what i meant so dont try and be a smart ass. I understand why you wrote it but just because of one post its not necessary to make a post insulting peoples grammar, thats it please dont come back on it i cant be bothered replying again, im just making a point.

What real embarassing (and this happens far too often) is when I belt out one of my essays, and someone else comes along later and says everything I said, just as well, in only three sentences.

Writing, I can do. Editing, aye, there's the rub...

Consider the medium: it's an online gaming forum, not the NYT Review of Books. Many of the posters here are still in school, and haven't yet comprehended the finer points of semi-colons. Lord knows I didn't really understand them until AFTER I graduated with honors in English.

That said, I do pay attention to spelling and grammar, in that if a post is articulate and well-structured, I will automatically lend the poster greater respect and attention than I will if I have to try to insert the punctuation as I go. If a post is too incoherent, I ignore it and move on.

The best method I can think of to improve the caliber of posts is to try and make articulate, thought-out arguments yourself. If people respect what you say, they will respect the way you said it, which will lead to emulation and motivation to improve their own postings. Correcting them or mocking them will only make you a tyrant and them the victim.

Besides, this ain't school.

I think the medium is an appropriate one to examine because it represents a diverse range of ages, professions, students, etc. Given that many of the posters here are students who will be future participants in the workforce and society at large, I think they are the constituents that ought to concern us most.

On a more personal note, I have three siblings, the eldest of which is ten years younger than me and a sophomore in high school. He asked me to read an essay of his. It struck me that he had yet to learn proper essay and paragraph structure, e.g. thesis and lead-in sentences, which all students should understand by the end of their sophomore year in high school. I obviously don't think any less of him, but his writing sucks. I don't blame my parents as they were born and reared in Asia. I do blame myself a bit, and I blame the primary educational system, too. Nonetheless, I just feel that language skills have deteriorated alarmingly in recent years.

I honestly like to see people who take english as their first sound somewhat educated, even if it is on a forum.

That being said, i'm not gonna bother getting really upset over it. I am prone to correcting people, however.

Yeah, it's kind of funny. Given the topic of this thread, I find myself choosing my words very, very carefully in an effort to avoid being called a hypocrite... lol. I usually don't express myself this formally. But yeah, I'm sure most of us on this forum (and everyone that's participated in this thread) have ample command of the English language. I just wanted to have a light-hearted, no-consequences discussion =).

I'm a horrible typist, so I do tend to misspell and use shortened words when I'm chatting, so I don't really mind it ingame. When I have the time to write a thought out response, such as a forum or email, then yes, I see no reason to NOT make posts as intelligible as possible.

Not everyone is a perfect speller or grammatical wizard, but if I have to take more time trying to figure out what you're saying than answering your question, I'm more likely to respond very sarcastically or not at all.

If I am in a situation where time is critical (i.e. live chat, or doing Ascension quests

) I will often abbreviate my spelling. I also have a tendency to "send first, proofread later". However, in a forum post, I try to be more precise my thoughts and typing. I am willing to spend a couple of extra minutes writing the post in Word so as to make sure my point is understood.

Don't get me wrong; I won't hold it against you if you do not go to the same lengths as I do to ensure your post is legible. Then again, I may not read it either.
